The landmark Regent Theatre holds a key part in our city’s history since opening as a grand picture palace in 1929. Having survived a fire, a flood, twenty years in darkness and many threats of demolition to turn the magnificent theatre into a car park or tabaret, the venue reopened in August 1996 meticulously refurbished and returned to its breathtaking former glory.

Today it stands more lavish and grand than ever. With seating for up to 2,145 patrons over two levels it is one of the most magnificent auditoriums complete with original chandeliers, bespoke original features, luxurious seating with plenty of leg room and a beautiful proscenium. It continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions including Disney’s The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Sunset Boulevard, Wicked, Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical, the world premiere of King Kong and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies.

The Regent Theatre is situated in the Melbourne CBD and is accessible by all modes of transport.

The Regent Theatre is a spectacular heritage listed theatre which opened in 1929. As some of its areas are only accessible by stairs, our staff will do their best to assist patrons requiring assistance. Patrons with any special requirements are asked to speak with our Box Office when booking their tickets or in advance of their arrival.

The main entrance in Collins Street has 14 steps with 6 evenly spaced handrails, a landing break, then 5 more steps up to the entry doors. The Box Office is located to the right at the top of the first set of steps. The VIP Window is to the left. There are glass doors across the width of the entrance, which are kept open when a performance is on. There is an entrance foyer that leads to the Stalls foyer bar and auditorium.

    Accessible Entrance
On arrival at the Regent Theatre, please see a member of our Front of House team or Security Guard out the front of the venue. They will be able to escort you via the lift which is located next to the Regent Theatre. This lift will take you to the Stalls area of the theatre. Please note there is no lift access to the Dress Circle area of the Regent Theatre. If you require access to the Box Office, please see a member of our staff out the front of the venue who will be able to assist.

Access to the Stalls is on both the left and the right of the rear foyer. The Stalls area is raked. There is greater than usual space between rows, giving patrons a large amount of legroom. There are two central aisles and two side aisles.
The only access to the Dress Circle is via two sets of large staircases. Please note that the marble staircases date back to the theatre’s construction and are slightly worn on the edges. This makes them rather slippery and patrons should take extra care with footing in these areas. Seating in the Dress Circle area is stepped and there are no handrails.

There are both Male and Female toilets both upstairs and downstairs at the Regent Theatre. All toilets have steps and handrails.

There is a visible sign, however, please see an usher for directions at the theatre if required.

For all wheelchair/accessible seating enquiries please contact the Box Office on (03) 9299 9800.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no lift access to the Dress Circle at the Regent Theatre.
